Ocean City, NJ – May 23, 2008 – Come join in on the fun and support amyloidosis awareness at the 5th Annual Chip Miller Charitable Foundation Surf Fest presented by Fox Riders Company, Ocean Minded and supporting sponsors O’Neill, Dakine and Smith Optics. The event is scheduled for Tuesday, August 5 at the 7th Street surfing beach in Ocean City, NJ.
“It is an honor for Fox to once again be the presenting sponsor,” said Chris Drummy, Fox Surf Promotions Manager. “ In my opinion the Chip Miller Surf Fest is the biggest and most important event on the East Coast this summer. We are looking forward to supporting this great event for many years to come.”
This year’s event will include special guest Bethany Hamilton a top competitor on the Women’s World Qualifying Series Tour. Bethany is scheduled to sign autographs on the beach from 1pm-2pm and participate in an expression session. Five years ago Hamilton shocked the world with her undying passion after losing her left arm in a vicious shark attack on the North Shore of Kauai, Hawaii, her home. With her commitment to surfing unscathed, Bethany was back in the water a month later and immediately became an international symbol of bravery, perseverance and strength. It is with that same drive and devotion that she competes today on the WQS tour.
Bob Tanner, Director of Marketing for Ocean Minded stated, “It's always a great honor for me to be able to come back to Ocean City, the place I learned how to surf, and give something back to the community. Each year, the Chip Miller Surf Fest enables me to do that and I am very excited to be here, representing Ocean Minded. I can't think of any event that's more 'ocean minded' than 'The Chip', and this year looks to be the best yet!”
The event is named in honor of Chip Miller, who passed away from amyloidosis in March of 2004. Surf Fest was conceived by Nick Bricker, a childhood friend of Chip’s son, Lance Miller, to benefit the Chip Miller Charitable Foundation in their fight against amyloidosis. “Chip Miller was a surfing enthusiast and mentor to young surfers,” said Bricker. “Since he did so much for me when I was a kid, I wanted to do something in return to show my appreciation. “For me, the surf fest is my way of saying thank you.”
Dean Randazzo, from Ocean Minded will also participate in this year’s surf fest. This will be Dean’s first surfing event after battling Hodgkin’s disease for the fourth time.
Last year’s event raised over $10,000 with 24 professional surfers from around the world competing for a $3,000 purse. Austin Ware, from Reef, won the pro division in 2007.
This year with the support of our national sponsors and local sponsors alike, such as Heritage Surf & Sport, Surfers Supplies, 7th Street Surf Shop, Ginsberg Bakery and Boyar’s Market the event is sure to be even a bigger success.
Rob Cloupe, from Smith Optics and DaKine said, "The Chip Miller has become the pinnacle charity surf event in the state of New Jersey. With hundreds of contestants, great vibe, family atmosphere, and an amazing cause, Smith Optics and Dakine are proud to lend a helping hand and create awareness for a little known disease called amyloidosis."
The annual after- party begins at 7pm at El Fish Stixx in Margate, NJ. “We are very grateful to have the support and friendship of Carmen Rone,” said Lance Miller. “By providing us with the free use of his restaurant allows us to commit the money we raise from ticket sales and auction items to amyloidosis research and educational programs. We invite everyone to El Fish Stixx to help us raise money and awareness for this awful disease that took my father’s life.” The after-party will also include a silent auction and door prizes with items including surf boards, wetsuits, fishing gear and electronic equipment. Entry tickets are $20.
The Chip Miller Surf Fest is open to all ages with divisions that include Long board, Short board, Men, Jr. Men, Groms, Women and a Parent/Child heat. Pre-registration costs $25. Registration day of the event is $30.
